The location

In the middle of Drenthe, not the middle of nowhere

Orvelter Hof sits on Mr. J.B. Kanweg in Witteveen, in the municipality of Midden-Drenthe. The name is literal: from Assen, Emmen and Hoogeveen you drive here in twenty to twenty-five minutes. If your team comes from Groningen or Zwolle, it is about an hour.

For a meeting in Drenthe, that location does half the work. A team arriving from three directions does not want a venue that costs two thirds of the group half a day of travel. We are not genuinely far from anyone in the province, and that shows in the turnout.

What you will not find here: a meeting room in Drenthe with four other groups along the same corridor. The venue is let to one party per day. Both working rooms, the kitchen, the bar and the terrace belong to your group that day.

Travel times

How long will you be on the road?

Driving times outside rush hour, measured from each city centre. By public transport you travel to Beilen station; that is the nearest stop, about fifteen minutes' drive from the door.

Parking

Thirty spaces, no hunting

There are thirty parking spaces on the grounds, free and right by the entrance. If your group arrives in fifteen cars, they fit without anyone ending up on the verge. That sounds obvious, but at a city-centre venue, parking a large group is usually the first problem of the day.

A coach or two minibuses can turn on the yard and load and unload at the door. Useful if you bring materials, flip charts or your own catering: you carry nothing across a car park.

Public transport

Beilen is the nearest station

Beilen is the nearest railway station, about fifteen minutes' drive away. The local train between Zwolle and Groningen calls there twice an hour, so from Meppel, Hoogeveen, Assen and Groningen you arrive without changing.

There is no bus from the station to Witteveen that fits meeting hours. A taxi from Beilen is the practical answer. We do not arrange transport ourselves — we would rather not promise it than half-deliver on a morning when your session starts at nine.

In practice almost every group comes by car and shares lifts. Tell us how many cars you expect when you book, and we will take that into account when we lay out the grounds.

From your city

Where is your team coming from?

Not every journey is the same. Four common starting points — and what the distance means for the format you are best off choosing.

Groningen

Conference venue from Groningen

From Groningen you are here in about 55 minutes, via the A28 and the N381. Groningen organisations book the 24-hour format more often than Drenthe ones: if you are driving an hour anyway, staying over makes more sense than two trips in one day. If you are looking for an unusual conference venue outside Groningen, this is roughly the first point where the landscape genuinely differs from home.

Assen

Conference venue from Assen

At 27 kilometres, Assen is the nearest city: 25 minutes via the N857 and the N381. For Assen teams, half a day here is easy to arrange without the journey becoming an agenda item of its own. Also practical for provincial and municipal bodies based in Assen that would rather not hold their session in their own building.

Emmen

Conference venue from Emmen

From Emmen you drive here in 25 minutes, about 33 kilometres via the N381. Emmen has no direct rail link to Beilen, so you will almost certainly come by car — which, with thirty parking spaces, is no obstacle.

Hoogeveen, Meppel and Zwolle

From southern Drenthe and Overijssel

At twenty minutes, Hoogeveen is even quicker than Assen. Meppel is 35 minutes away, Zwolle about 55. For teams from Overijssel this is often the first venue north of their own province where it is genuinely quiet; the A28 runs straight towards it.

The room

What you will find here

There are two working rooms on the ground floor. The large hall takes up to 36 people and is set up in whichever layout you specify: theatre, cabaret, boardroom, U-shape, block or long tables. Alongside it is a separate meeting room for up to 20. On weekdays you can use both at once, at no extra charge.

If you want to stay over, there are seventeen bedrooms with private bathrooms. Cooking happens in our own kitchen; the bar and the terrace come with the hire. Prices, layouts per room and the packages from four to thirty-two hours are set out on the conference venue page.

  • Large hall up to 36, meeting room up to 20
  • Projector, flip chart and free wifi in both rooms
  • Our own kitchen, bar and terrace
  • 17 bedrooms with private bathroom

Frequently asked questions

About the route and getting here

About 27 kilometres, a 25-minute drive via the N857 and the N381. Assen is the nearest large city. By train you travel to Beilen station — nine minutes from Assen — and from there it is another fifteen minutes by taxi.

Count on about 55 minutes for the sixty kilometres, via the A28 and the N381. By train you reach Beilen in half an hour, plus fifteen minutes by taxi. Many Groningen groups therefore choose a package with an overnight stay, so they only have to drive once.

Beilen station, about fifteen minutes' drive away. It sits on the Zwolle–Groningen line, where a local train calls twice an hour. There is no practical bus connection from the station to Witteveen; a taxi is the usual solution.

No, we do not run a shuttle service. Almost every group comes by car and shares lifts. If someone travels by train, they usually take a taxi from Beilen or a colleague drives over. We would rather not promise transport than half-deliver it.

There are thirty parking spaces on our own grounds, free and without a barrier. That is enough for virtually every group; it only gets tight if a party of 36 shares no lifts at all. A coach or minibuses can turn on the yard and load and unload at the door.

The large hall holds up to 36 people in theatre layout, and the separate meeting room up to 20 — you can use both at once for a plenary session and breakouts. For a conference venue in Drenthe with more than 36 delegates we are too small. Overnight stays go up to 36 people.

Yes. Via Emmen and the border crossing at Nordhorn or Meppen you drive here from the Emsland in about an hour and a half. The last twenty kilometres are on provincial roads; navigate to Mr. J.B. Kanweg 7a, Witteveen, and you arrive at the door.

We don't offer tours, but on this website you'll find photos of the hall and the rooms, and the floor plan. Questions about the layout or what's possible? Feel free to call or email and we'll think along with you.
