The point of an away day

An away day is not a long meeting

A meeting works through an agenda. An away day should produce something the office can't: the decision that has been hanging for months, a plan for next year, or the conversation nobody wants to start in the half hour between two meetings.

What ruins an away day is almost always the same. Too much on the agenda. Too few breaks. And a room the next group walks into at four. That last one isn't a risk here, because midweek the house belongs to your group alone.

Organising an away day

Three schedules, with prices

Pick the length that fits your question. Below is a schedule for each option that works in practice, with the per-person price from our business packages. Would you rather run a short strategy session than a full away day? The same schedules work, you just take the shorter option.

Eight-hour away day

Annual planning, strategy, or a team that needs to realign.

€ 88,50

per person

Includes room hire for one part of the day, extended lunch, unlimited coffee and tea, projector, flip chart and wifi. Our most-chosen option.

Example schedule

  1. 09:00Arrival and coffee. The year in numbers
  2. 10:00Session 1: what works, what costs too much energy
  3. 11:30Break outside. Don't stay in the room
  4. 12:00Extended lunch
  5. 13:00Subgroups break away: meeting room, bar, terrace

Room for subgroups

One house, five places to work

Three subgroups at three tables in the same room can hear each other. That is why there is a separate meeting room alongside the main hall. And because you're the only group midweek, you can use the whole house: each subgroup finds its own corner, and at half past two everyone is back in the hall.

01

Main hall

Up to 36 people. Theatre, boardroom, U-shape or hollow square — you tell us what you need. Projector and flip chart are ready.

02

Meeting room

A separate room with its own door and one long table, for up to 20 people. Where a subgroup goes while the rest keep working in the hall.

03

Bar

Informal. Works well for the conversation that carries on after the session.

04

Games attic

Large and far enough from the meeting room to work undisturbed. Table tennis for when things stall.

05

South-facing terrace

Picnic tables on the grass. In good weather, the best spot for a session in pairs.

Which rooms we hold open depends on your group size and programme. Tell us how many subgroups you expect when you enquire and we'll set it out.

Midweek

Why “no other guests” is more than a sales line

In a hotel or conference centre you share the building. You notice it at the moments that count: the corridor where another group is on a break while you're still working, the room that has to be empty by five, the flip chart that has ended up somewhere else.

We rent Orvelter Hof to one group at a time. Your things stay where they are when you go for a walk. The morning's flip chart is still on the wall in the afternoon. And when the conversation finally gets somewhere at quarter past five, nobody has to get up.

From Monday to Thursday the grounds are silent: no weekend groups, no children in the playground, no cars arriving. An away day falls on a working day by definition, and those are the quietest days of the week here.

What you can do between sessions

Nobody lasts eight hours in a meeting room. Twenty minutes outside does more for the second half of the day than another cup of coffee. These are the four things our business guests add most often.

Frequently asked questions

About an away day at Orvelter Hof

Question not covered? Call Ruurd on 06-11 78 49 75 or email info@orvelterhof.nl.

A heisessie is shorter: a four-hour half day around one question. A heidag covers a full day, with room for breaks and subgroups. Both Dutch words come from the heathland where companies once held their annual meetings — and we're still right next to it. The schedules above work for either; you pick the length.

The main hall suits 8 to 36 people, in theatre, boardroom, U-shape or hollow square; alongside it there is a separate meeting room for 20. Staying over? We have 17 twin rooms with private bathrooms; the accommodation holds up to 36 people.

From € 45,50 p.p. for four hours, € 88,50 p.p. for eight hours including an extended lunch, and from € 179,50 p.p. for 24 hours with dinner and an overnight stay. Room hire, coffee and tea, projector, flip chart and wifi are always included.

Start with one question, not an agenda. Put that question on the flip chart in the morning and leave it there all day. Plan less than you think you can manage: two content blocks in an eight-hour day is plenty. Build in real breaks, outside. And finish with who does what by when rather than minutes — otherwise you'll be standing in exactly the same place in three months.

Yes. Alongside the main hall there is a separate meeting room for 20 people — that's usually where the first subgroup goes. Beyond that you can use the bar, the games attic and the terrace. Because you're the only group midweek, all of them are yours. Tell us how many subgroups you expect when you enquire and we'll hold the rooms.

That's what the room gets used for most. Flip charts and markers are ready, the walls are empty enough to cover, and the walk after an hour of brainstorming is often when the idea lands. For a half-day brainstorm, the four-hour package is enough.

In Witteveen, in the middle of Drenthe, about half an hour from Assen, Emmen and Hoogeveen. Roughly an hour from Groningen or Zwolle. Parking is free right at the door, and woods and heathland start next to the grounds.

You can, but midweek exclusivity is our strongest card: from Monday to Thursday the grounds are silent. At weekends the house is more often booked by groups staying overnight — ask us about availability.

That is mostly what companies come here for. What inspires is not the room; it is that at eleven you walk straight onto the heathland, at four nobody has to ask whether you can stay a bit longer, and in the evening the whole team eats at one table. A strategy session venue should above all not feel like an office. This one does not.
